September 12, 2016: Week 1, Day 1: What is a Disciple’s Path?

Luke 10:25-28: Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus.  “Teacher,” he said, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”   He said to him, “What is written in the law? What do you read there?”  He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”   And he said to him, “You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.”

Reflection: How would you define a disciple of Jesus?  For me this question is answered in the above scripture.  First we must choose to love God.  And one way we do that is to actively love our neighbors, and love ourselves.  By loving our neighbors and ourselves we honor the divinity of our creator God that rests in each of us.  But that is a hard thing to do sometimes.  Jesus came to teach us how to do that.  We help our neighbors who are in need and we also learn to forgive them and ourselves when we make mistakes.  This is something that we always need to be practicing to get good at it.  I think that a disciple of Jesus is someone who is constantly practicing love, forgiveness, and service, with the intention of continually getting better at it.
